Event Recap: It was a battle to end end for the Bears and the Tigers on a cloudy and rainy Saturday afternoon. Each team looked fired up and ready to fight for every ball from the first whistle. The girls from Berkshire focused on winning the 50-50 battles and getting those balls before the players from Suffield. Melody Barros '15 and Lucia Perkins '14, who had a combined 6 headers in the first half, helped keep that energy and spunk on the field. The four midfielders did an amazing job of transitioning from defense to offense throughout the entire game. Lily Weil ' 13 was a workhorse on the right side, as she sprinted up and down the field to gain the ball and provide beautiful leading passes up to forwards Allie McErlean '14 and Kelley Hartmann '12. It all came together when Lily Weil ran the ball down to the top of the box and dished the ball off to McErlean on the outside. McErlean got caught up in traffic, but stopped the ball from going past her with a great header. Like a magnet, the ball was down at McErlean's feet again, and with her left foot she shot the ball towards the Suffield goal. With much suspense, it rolled across the goal line, and Berkshire was up 1 to 0 with 13 minutes remaining in the half.
As anticipated, the Tigers came out very hungry in the second half. Unfortunately, Berkshire's focus waned and right off the bat, Suffield had a wonderful scoring opportunity. Luckily, the skill and athleticism from Berkshire keeper Lauren Henman '14 prevented the ball from finding the back of the net. In total, Henman had an impressive 17 saves. Suffield did not back down, however, and got two quick goals at the 30- and 25-minute marks. The Bears worked very hard to keep the pressure on, and to not let the deficit widen any more. Anna Heissenbuttel '13 showed her adeptness at defense again this game and would not back down from any Suffield forward. Time ticked down, and the urgency increased. The Bears worked so hard and so well in the last five minutes of the half, with utter desperation in an attempt to score one more goal. But 40 quick minutes went by, and the Bears were still down by a goal. It stung a great deal, but each Berkshire player left everything they had out on that field. The final score was 2-1 Suffield. |
