Berkshire School

Student Life

Life at Berkshire is busy, whether you live in a dorm or at home.  The academic rigor is real and down-time is precious.  But, we are more than an academic machine:  we believe that important learning also happens outside of the classroom.  Our students are invested in their relationships with each other and the adults in the community, and they work hard to build a community that is competitive and compassionate, confident and humble, purposeful and spontaneous.

Like all schools, we have traditions that help define our community:  Mountain Day, Winter Carnival, Gracious Living Day, Senior Skip Day, talent shows, jazz cafés, and myriad weekend activities like dances, hypnotists, dodge ball tournaments and open houses.  But what is unique about Berkshire is that our students do not simply uphold traditions and show up to events.  Instead, they build tradition and they generate activity, and as a result they are involved, invested and connected.  We like to say that Berkshire School belongs to our students, and our Student Life Office—including our Dean of Students, Dean of Community Life and Multicultural Affairs and Director of Student Activities—partners with them so that they manage the responsibility well.
