With dramatic glass walls and skylights and a terraced landscape, the new math/ science center will be as eye-pleasing as it will be practical. And in keeping with the school’s commitment to sustainability, it will be certified by the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Green Building Rating System.
The center is being designed Centerbrook Architects and Planners of Centerbrook, Conn., architects of Yale’s Kroon Hall, an acclaimed showcase for green building technologies. The facility will replace two 90-year-old buildings, Memorial Hall and Glenny House, which have been largely vacant for the last several years. Pending completion of the funding and final Board approval in May, those buildings will be razed this summer and site preparation will continue through the fall. Construction on the new center will begin in January, 2011 and will be complete by the start of school in September, 2012.
Head of School Mike Maher is enthusiastic about the impact of new facility. “It is no secret that America has fallen behind in these two key disciplines, and the new center will significantly improve the learning opportunities available to our students in these fields.”
