Caroline Wood shared first prize honors

On February 23, Berkshire’s IV Form English students spent an evening reciting poetry under the eaves of Allen Theater. Every student had already recited a poem by heart in front of his or her English class, so the students in the audience knew how their classmates on stage felt. Each English class had previously elected representatives for the annual Poetry Night.

Teacher Dary Dunham emceed and set the mood for the night by reciting the opening lines to Robert Frost’s “Stopping by Woods on a Snowy Evening.” These lines resonated with the students because they had just traipsed through a beautiful snowstorm with their friends and were now settling comfortably into a warm Allen Theater. Classes sat together to cheer on their representatives during the contest. It was a special night for all, and a true spirit of collaboration was made evident at the night’s closing when students encouraged each other to get up on stage and share poetry they had written. The audience was also treated to the sounds of rumbling sheets of snow avalanching off Allen Theater’s slanted slate roof onto the soft snowbanks below.
