Day Students

Berkshire is proud that 13 percent of its student population is made up of girls and boys from Berkshire (Massachusetts), Columbia (New York) and Litchfield (Connecticut) counties. They are an important link to the outside community, and the contributions they make in the classroom and on the playing fields are often found in the local newspapers. Day students may and often do stay on campus until study hall check-in time for boarders. They can also drive to and from school, but not during the school day and never with boarding students.

Absences  When day students are ill, late, or absent due to inclement weather (or other reasons), their parents need to call the Student Health Service office (229-1275) before 8:00 a.m. each day the student is not attending classes. Weather  Classes for boarding students are never cancelled due to weather. If weather is a concern during the school day, parents are responsible for determining when and if their child should come to campus or go home. Parents and day students are to use their discretion and not take any unnecessary risks due to inclement weather. Day students who leave early must sign out in the Student Life Office. Cars  In order to drive on campus, day students need parental permission in writing on file in the Student Life Office. Parking for day students is located behind the Athletic Center. This area is paved and is lit at night. Students may not operate cars between the first and last school appointments. Students are not permitted to loiter in cars.  Day students are not allowed to drive boarders off campus. Campus Stays  Day students must leave campus by study hall check-in time for boarders (8:00 p.m.) unless they have special permission. Students wishing to spend the night on campus must obtain permission from the Student Life Office, the House Head of the dorm in question and their parents. This permission must be received by 12 noon for weekday stays and noon on Thursday for weekend stays. There may be a nominal fee charged for overnight stays in the dormitory when the stay is not related to school activities, weather, or sports (for example, for dormitory stays when parents are on vacation).
